In what will prove to be a historic landmark in the Philippine game development industry, Dreamlords Digital has launched the first Kickstarter from a Philippine-based studio. The studio which previously released Zombie Fields and Zombie Fields Reloaded (iOS/Android) launched the Kickstarter for Graywalkers: Purgatory last October 24th, 2013.
The studio describes Graywalkers as an “emergent Strategic and Tactical Turn-based 3D Role-Playing Game set in a stylish supernatural post-apocalyptic world, where parts of Heaven, Hell and Earth have merged together in an event called “The Rupture”.
Inspired by games such as the classic iterations of X-Com and Fallout, Graywalkers can be played in either isometric or perspective view; and will feature three main game modes: campaign, free-form (procedurally generated single player), and multiplayer. As previously stated, the developers are also aiming for emergent gameplay “where the player’s decisions and actions have the ability to change and affect the world in profound ways”. Other gameplay elements include a customizable character, different races, character paths/classes, character recruitment and strategy/RPG staples such as resource management and levels/experience progression.
The game’s kickstarter page also provides a brief background on the role of the player controlled character:
“In this game, you play the prophesied leader of the Graywalkers, 36 Hidden Ones who walk the line between the darkness and the light. It is your task to gather them all, unite the the chaotic lands of Purgatory under one banner, and lead the war to reclaim the world for humanity. Your actions will affect the economy and politics of this land ravaged by the war between the supernaturals.”
Graywalkers is currently in pre-alpha stage (pre-production to early development) and is being built on the Unity 3D engine. According to Dreamlords Digital, the estimated development time for the title is 12 to 18 months. The initial release platforms are PC, Mac, and possibly Linux. A mobile version of the game for tablets is possible after the initial release but no concrete details are currently available.
Dreamlords Digital’s kickstarter has a listed goal of $100,000 and as of this writing, has earned $13,368 from 77 backers, with one backer pledging a whopping $10,000 or around ₱430,000. Complete details about the project, studio, and the kickstarter (backers, rewards, stretch goals) including a nice introductory video are posted on the Graywalkers kickstarter page.
But wait, what is Kickstarter anyway?
To put it simply, Kickstarter is a crowd-funding tool for creative projects such as films, music, books, comics, and of course, video games. Kickstarter projects are funded by backers by pledging/contributing a specific amount of money to the project. In return, the project backers get rewards which depend on the amount they contribute (could be a copy of the finished product, signed artwork, a spot on the credits, posters, etc.). Kickstarter members can be from any country and fund projects by using their credit cards.
Projects on kickstarter always have a target/goal amount, which is the minimum amount of money the kickstarter should raise for the project to be funded. If the project fails to earn the goal amount after the kickstarter period, project creators will not get the money already pledged by backers and the kickstarter will fail (backers’ credit cards are only charged once a project hits its goal amount). For example, if a project has a goal of $10,000 and has raised $9,900 after the kickstarter period, the project creators will not get $9,900 already pledged and backers’ credit cards won’t be charged.
